Description

Berlin Bureau - Berlin, Germany, January 22. The Berlin Hitlerites held a memorial ceremony on the Nikolai church yard at the grave of Horst Wessel. A National Socialist, Adolf Hitler made the memorial speech himself. Before going in the church yard the Hitlerites had meetings on the Buelow Platz which is situated in the neighborhood of the church yard. At the Buelow Platz is also the headquarters of the German Communist Party and the police were expecting great riots in this district during the meeting. The police which was put on the highest readiness for an alarm had armoured cars and many of them also were armed with carbines. This was one of the last demonstrations by the Hitlerites before Adolf Hitler rode into power in Germany on the rising tide of his militant fascism. The desperate political experiments of the last two years were culminated when President von Hindenburg entrusted the chancellorship to the fiery little Austrian from Munich. 1/30/33 774685 — Photo shows police on horse back dispersing demonstrators on the Berlin Kaiser Wilhelm Strasse, a side street of the Buelow Platz during the January 22 demonstration. 1/30/33 Stamp: FEB 1-1933 Centralpress Association Handwritten: 504
