Albert Leo Schlageter, German officer shot ten years ago as a spy by the French during the Ruhr occupation, was glorified as the first martyr and hero of Nazi Germany May 28th in the first ceremony at Düsseldorf, attended by 500,000 persons from all parts of the nation. A huge cross of iron has been erected to his memory on the spot where he was executed. This photo shows the aged father of Schlageter during the ceremonies before the cross.
